Llanrhaeadr - ym - Mochnant
Pistyll Rhaeadr the highest waterfall in Wales is accessed from the village of Llanrhaeadr - ym - Mochnant. Waters of River Disgynfa cascade 240ft down mossy pineflanked cliff and through natural arch into deep pool.
Llanrhaeadr is a popular base for pony - trekkers and walkers, because the surrounding mountains and valleys are laced with lanes, bridleways and footpaths. It is also close to Lake Vyrnwy, which was built by Liverpool Corporation in 1880s.
Solid stone buildings roofed with slate curl round the riverside church whose 16th - century vicars include William Morgan, a future Bishop of St Asaph. At Llanrhaeadr, Morgan completed the first Welsh translation of the Bible in 1588. Permission to undertake the work had been granted by Elizabeth I after her father, Henry VIII, banned any official use of Welsh. The translation did much to keep the language alive.
Our two days was made more enjoyable with our stay in Llys Morgan Guest House . Llys Morgan use to be the old vicarage where William Morgan lived. The present proprietor Jean Morgan and her husband Bernard gave us a warm welcome and I recommend that anyone who visits the area should stay in this charming historical house set in mature gardens, quiet and private, and enjoy the hospitality.
